PERÚ
Once the seat of the illustrious Tawantinsuyu, the vast Inca Empire that extended from the lush jungle lowlands of modern-day Colombia
to the scorching Atacama Desert in northern Chile, post-colonial Perú was forged at the juncture of the ruthless sword of the Spanish
Conquest and the indefatigable will of its native inhabitants. Despite the European victory, the language, traditions and blood of
the Inca peoples still flow freely through the veins of this Andean nation. Tragically, this clash of civilizations left a once mighty empire
in ruins. Modern-day Perú, according to anthropological research, is far more destitute than its pre-Colombian counterpart. Many
Peruvians struggle to meet their basic needs on a daily basis.
WHAT IS ASCEND DOING IN PERÚ?
ASCEND is working to eliminate poverty in the famed colonial city of Cusco, revered in Inca mythology as “el ombligo del mundo” – the
earth’s bellybutton. Our regional office works closely with people facing hardships in marginalized urban and rural zones on the outskirts
of Cusco. Through sustainable programs in our four project areas, with projects such as school and community center constructions,
Ascend Business Training courses, health campaigns and gardens/greenhouses, we are combating poverty, fostering community
strength in the area and providing opportunity to those in need. We need your help!
THE EXPEDITION - WHAT WILL I DO?
ASCEND has many projects in progress in Perú. Participants will have the opportunity to work in school construction, community gardens
that provide much-needed nutrition in disadvantaged communities, medical campaigns conducted by local and visiting physicians
to service marginalized areas, and more. People of all skill sets are needed. If you have a specific area of expertise, please let us know.
*Explore/Learn: Expedition Participants have the option to add a Cultural Tour Package. These are all-inclusive. For this expedition,
we have two options: Machu Picchu/Sacred Valley $395 USD, Inca Trail $375 USD. These prices are approximate.
WHAT IF I DON’T KNOW SPANISH?
Spanish fluency is not a requirement. Sure, it would be helpful, but we’ll have an expedition leader, guides, in country staff and Spanish-
speaking participants on call 24/7 to interpret. Attempting to bridge the language barrier will be one of the most exciting parts of
your expedition!
WHERE ARE WE STAYING?
Hotels are still pending confirmation and we are always willing to consider participant’s personal needs when finalizing accommodations.
Past participants have enjoyed staying at the Ramada Costa del Sol in Lima and at the Royal Inka II in Cusco.
WHAT ABOUT BOOKING AIRFARE?
We highly suggest that participants book through us, as soon as possible in order to obtain optimal flights and prices. Ascend will book
it for you at no additional cost.
DO I NEED A VISA? HOW DO I GET IT?
No, you don’t need one. You can stay in Perú for up to 90 days on a free tourist visa that you’ll obtain at the airport upon arrival.
